Breeding goals and economic values for Nellore cattle in a full-cycle production system Animal Sciences
Moreira, Heverton Luis; Savegnago, Rodrigo Pelicioni; Freitas, Luara Afonso; Lôbo, Raysildo Barbosa; Bezerra, Luiz Antônio Framartino; Paz, Claudia Cristina Paro de.
The objective of this study was to develop a bio-economic model for the estimation of economic values of economically important traits in a full-cycle beef cattle production system. The bio-economic model calculated economic values by simulating the impact of changes in the profit of the system consisting of a 1% increase in each trait of the breeding objective, while the other traits were kept constant. The bio-economic model was effective in estimating the sources of revenues and expenses of the production system. The estimated economic values were, in the order of importance for the full-cycle system, R$ 3.69 for male slaughter weight, R$ 3.63 for male weaning weight, R$ 3.58 for weaning rate, R$ 3.40 for female slaughter weight, R$ 2.30 for female...

Breeding objectives and economic values for traits of low input family-based beef cattle production system in the State of Rio Grande do Sul R. Bras. Zootec.
Laske,Carlos Henrique; Teixeira,Bruno Borges Machado; Dionello,Nelson José Laurino; Cardoso,Fernando Flores.
The objectives of this study were to define breeding objectives and derive economic weights for production traits in family-based beef cattle systems, assess the sensitivity of these weights to changes in market and husbandry indicators and estimate the expected genetic changes in the selection criteria proposed. Based on data from the production systems, farms revenues and expenses, obtained from interviews and meetings with producers, a bioeconomic model was derived, relating biological traits of animals with the financial result of the production system based on calf-crop, selling male calves and culling cows for finishing. Traits considered in the model as breeding goals were weaning rate, weaning weight and cow weight. The economic weights, obtained...

Modelling Agricultural Systems: Applications to Livestock Breeding AgEcon
Hattam, Caroline.
Traditionally the evaluation of animal genetic traits has focused primarily on production traits and the construction of selection indices. Selection indices, however, fail to consider the effect of management practices and the environment on productivity. Non-production traits are either under-valued or not valued at all. Given the changing demands placed on agriculture and the increased understanding of the effects of agriculture on the environment, this approach can be considered myopic. While techniques are available to link economic and biophysical/environmental models, little has been applied in the context of genetic trait evaluation. This paper therefore explores the potential for integration and the development of methods that capture not only...

Selection indexes in the simultaneous increment of yield components in topcross hybrids of green maize PAB
Candido,Willame dos Santos; Silva,Caique Machado e; Costa,Maraiza Lima; Silva,Bruna Elaine de Almeida; Miranda,Beatriz Lima de; Pinto,Jefferson Fernando Naves; Reis,Edésio Fialho dos.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to define the most suitable selective strategy for the simultaneous increment of yield components of green maize, by comparing three selection indexes weighted by economic weights and by the REML/BLUP method, in the assessment of predicted genetic gains for traits of interest. An experiment with 75 topcross hybrids from partially inbred S1 lines of green maize was carried out in Jataí, in the state of Goiás, Brazil, using a randomized complete block design, with four replicates. The following yield traits were evaluated: straw ears and commercial ears, grain mass, ear length, ear diameter, and number of ear rows. The selection indexes of Smith and Hazel, Williams, and Mulamba & Mock were applied and weighted for...
